Expedition Overview
The 9-Day Technical 3-Peaks Grand Expedition is the ultimate East African mountaineering challenge. This grueling but deeply rewarding journey allows you to conquer all three major glaciated peaks of the legendary Rwenzori Mountains in a single, sweeping adventure.
Guided by our top IFMGA-trained mountaineering experts, you will face steep rock scrambles, traverse permanent equatorial glaciers, and utilize ropes, ice axes, and crampons. You will summit Vittorio Emanuele on Mount Speke (4,890m), Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley (5,109m), and Edward Peak on Mount Baker (4,843m). This is an expedition strictly designed for highly fit, experienced adventurers.

Daily Itinerary
Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut
Arrive at the Kasese Basecamp for a comprehensive equipment check and safety briefing. Begin the ascent through thick equatorial rainforest, listening for Rwenzori Turacos and Blue Monkeys. The steady climb ends at Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m).

Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut
Descend through the forest to cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge over the Mubuku River. Navigate steep, rocky, and slippery sections through the bamboo forest to reach John Matte Hut (3,414m), where you catch your first glimpse of the snow-capped peaks.

John Matte to Bujuku Hut
Today involves crossing the infamous Bigo Bogs. You’ll jump across tussocks and navigate boardwalks through surreal giant lobelias. The trail continues to the beautiful Lake Bujuku, sitting in a deep valley beneath Mount Stanley, Speke, and Baker.

Bujuku Hut (3,962m)
Summit Mount Speke (4,890m)
Your first summit! Ascend via Stuhlmann’s Pass to cross the snowline and reach the highest point of Mount Speke (Vittorio Emanuele Peak at 4,890m). Enjoy the sweeping panoramic views before descending back to Bujuku Hut for a well-earned rest.

Bujuku to Elena Hut
Leaving the bogs behind, you tackle a steep ascent through the Groundsel Gully. The trail heads upwards over rocky, freezing terrain to Elena Hut (4,541m). This is your icy basecamp for tomorrow’s push to the highest point in Uganda.

Summit Margherita Peak (5,109m)
Wake up at 2:00 AM. After a hot tea, you rope up and put on crampons to cross the Stanley Plateau and the Margherita glacier. It’s a tough, highly technical scramble, but standing on Africa’s 3rd highest peak at sunrise is unforgettable. Afterward, descend all the way down to Kitandara Hut.

Summit Mount Baker (4,843m)
Your final summit challenge! From Kitandara, take on a steep, rocky landscape towards Freshfield Pass, then scramble up to Edward Peak on Mount Baker. Capture spectacular photos of the entire Rwenzori range before descending back to Kitandara Hut.

Kitandara to Guy Yeoman Hut
A sharp climb out of the Kitandara lakes takes you over Freshfield Pass (4,282m). From here, the long descent begins. You’ll pass historical rock shelters and walk through beautiful alpine meadows filled with colorful mosses before reaching Guy Yeoman Hut.

Guy Yeoman to Basecamp Departure
The trail drops significantly today. You will navigate tricky descents past Kichuchu and through the bamboo zone, crossing the river to arrive at Nyabitaba Hut, before pushing down through the tropical rainforest to Nyakalengija Basecamp. Celebrate your monumental triple summit achievement!

Frequently Asked Questions
The best and most comfortable times to trek the Rwenzoris are during the dry seasons: December to February and June to August.
However, the Rwenzoris are notorious for having their own micro-climate. It can rain at any time of the year, so proper waterproof gear is absolutely essential regardless of when you book.
For Margherita Peak (5,109m), basic mountaineering experience is highly recommended but not strictly required if you are very fit and a fast learner. The final ascent involves crossing the Stanley Plateau glacier, requiring ropes, crampons, and ice axes.
Our expert IFMGA-trained guides will provide training on how to use the equipment during the trek. If you prefer to avoid the ice, our Central Circuit trek offers incredible high-altitude views without the technical glacier climbing.
Altitude Sickness can affect anyone, regardless of fitness level. Our itineraries are specifically designed with slow ascents to promote proper acclimatization.
Our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and carry oxygen saturation monitors. We recommend drinking 3-4 liters of water daily on the mountain and walking slowly ("pole pole"). You may also consult your doctor about altitude medications like Diamox before your trip.
Accommodation consists of basic but sturdy wooden mountain huts equipped with bunk beds and mattresses. You will need to bring your own warm sleeping bag.
Our expedition cooks prepare hearty, high-carb, and nutritious meals to keep your energy up. Breakfasts usually include porridge, eggs, and toast. Dinners consist of hot soups, pasta, rice, potatoes, and fresh vegetables. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets if informed in advance.
