The Primal Journey

The Bukurungu Trail offers a wilder, more remote alternative to the popular Central Circuit. It is designed for trekkers who prioritize deep wilderness, fewer crowds, and stunning alpine lake scenery.

Starting from the Kilembe or Nyakalengija trailheads, this route weaves its way through the dense vegetation of the Rwenzori foothills before opening up into breathtaking, glacier-carved valleys. Unlike the Central Circuit, the Bukurungu trail bypasses the Bigo Bogs entirely, offering a slightly drier but equally rugged ascent.

The trail is famous for its stunning water features, leading you past Lake Mahoma, Lake Bujuku, and the Mughuli lake system. It perfectly culminates at Margherita Camp, setting you up for the ultimate technical push to the 5,109m summit of Mount Stanley.

What to Expect on the Trail

Trail Conditions

Expect an authentic, rugged trail. You will navigate through thick montane forests, bamboo zones, and steep ridges. Because it lacks the extensive boardwalks of the Central Circuit, the terrain feels much more primal and untouched.

Wilderness Camping

This is a true expedition. Unlike the Central Circuit which relies on permanent wooden huts, Bukurungu trekkers sleep in heavy-duty mountaineering tents. Our porters set up camp daily, providing an immersive, under-the-stars experience.

Scenery & Lakes

Bukurungu is defined by water. You will trek past roaring waterfalls and camp beside high-altitude glacial tarns. The visual transition from the dense portal peaks to the icy Stanley Plateau is spectacular.

Weather & Climate

Because you are sleeping in tents, you must be prepared for the cold. While daytime hiking is warm, nighttime temperatures at the higher camps drop well below freezing, requiring a high-quality 4-season sleeping bag.
