Preparation Guide

Essential Gear Guide

A carefully curated checklist of the critical equipment required to safely conquer the wet, cold, and wildly beautiful Rwenzori Mountains.

Best Time to Climb

The Rwenzoris have a unique microclimate. While accessible year-round, timing makes a massive difference in trail conditions.

The Dry Seasons Ideal

Dec to Feb & Mid-June to Mid-Aug: Stable weather, clearer summit views, and firmer ground in the bogs. Crucial for Margherita Peak attempts.

The Wet Seasons

March to May & Sept to Nov: Heavy rainfall creates extremely deep mud and treacherous glacier conditions. Only for the most experienced and resilient.

1. Vital Footwear

The terrain dictates your footwear. You will transition from knee-deep mud bogs to rocky, glaciated alpine zones.

Rubber Boots (Gumboots) Required

Standard hiking boots will be destroyed in the lower Bigo Bogs. You must hike the first few days in tall rubber Wellington boots.

Waterproof Hiking Boots

Sturdy, broken-in, waterproof mountaineering boots with strong ankle support for the rocky zones and crampon attachment.

Thick Wool Socks (4-5 Pairs)

Heavyweight merino wool. No cotton. Always keep one dedicated, dry pair sealed in a bag strictly for sleeping.

2. Core Clothing

Layering is survival. You will experience 80°F (26°C) humidity and 14°F (-10°C) freezing winds. Avoid cotton completely.

Gore-Tex Shell Jacket & Pants Required

Your outer layer must be genuinely 100% waterproof and breathable. Rain is guaranteed; staying dry is your top priority.

Heavy Down/Fleece Jacket

Essential for nighttime at the high camps (Elena Hut/Margherita Camp) where temperatures drop below freezing.

Thermal Base Layers

2 sets of long-sleeve merino wool or synthetic tops and bottoms. These wick sweat and retain body heat.

Insulated Gloves & Beanie

Thick, waterproof alpine gloves for the summit push, plus a warm wool beanie that covers your ears.

3. Essential Gear

Porters carry your main duffel, but you are responsible for your day-to-day survival gear and hydration.

-10°C (14°F) Sleeping Bag Required

The mountain huts are unheated. A high-quality 4-season mummy sleeping bag is absolutely critical for recovery.

30L Daypack + Rain Cover

To carry your daily water, rain shell, camera, and lunch. A waterproof cover is mandatory to protect electronics.

Headlamp + Batteries

There is no electricity. Essential for the 2:00 AM alpine start for the summit. Cold drains batteries rapidly.

Dry Bags

The ultimate secret. Pack all your clothing inside sealed dry bags inside your duffel to guarantee they stay dry.

4. Technical Gear

Only required if you are attempting Margherita, Speke, or Baker peaks. (All items are available for rent).

Crampons

Must be compatible with your mountaineering boots for traversing the steep ice of the Stanley Plateau.

Ice Axe & Harness

Standard mountaineering axe for balance, and a climbing harness for roping up to your guide on the glacier.
