The Virungas offer an entirely different mountaineering experience compared to the glaciated peaks of the Rwenzoris. Here, you will find perfectly conical volcanic slopes covered in dense bamboo and Hagenia forests—the natural habitat of endangered Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys.

Need to Know Before You Go
Border Crossings
The Virungas span multiple countries. If you plan an extended itinerary crossing between Rwanda and Uganda to summit different peaks, an East African Tourist Visa is highly recommended to ensure smooth border logistics.
Permits & Rangers
Because the volcanoes sit inside protected national parks (home to forest elephants and buffaloes), every hike requires a specific climbing permit from the UWA or RDB, and you must be accompanied by armed rangers.
Terrain & Gear
Volcanic slopes are notoriously steep, muddy, and covered in dense, scratching vegetation. Sturdy hiking boots, gaiters, and thick gloves (for grabbing vegetation to haul yourself up) are absolutely essential.
