A Journey into the Ancient Caldera
Over 24 million years old, Mount Elgon once stood taller than Kilimanjaro before millennia of erosion reduced its height to 4,321 meters.
What sets Mount Elgon apart is its staggering size and ecological diversity. It boasts the largest volcanic base in the world and an enormous intact caldera spanning 40 square kilometers. Inside this vast crater, you will discover hot springs, deep gorges, and fascinating high-altitude vegetation.
Because it lacks the steep, glaciated slopes of the Rwenzoris, Mount Elgon offers an excellent, less arduous hiking experience. It requires no technical climbing skills, making it a fantastic expedition for those seeking raw wilderness and authentic cultural encounters.

The Best Mount Elgon Trails
Mount Elgon offers distinct approaches, from fast, steep ascents to magnificent cross-mountain traverses encompassing multiple ecosystems.
The Sipi Trail
Starting near the famous Sipi Falls, this trail is renowned for its magnificent waterfalls, the massive Tutum Cave, and sweeping bamboo forests. It is the longest route but offers an incredibly rewarding, scenic approach into the caldera.
The Sasa Trail
The original and most direct route to Wagagai Peak. The first day is an arduous slog climbing over 1,600m up the “Wall of Death,” but it crosses fascinating community settlements and beautiful bamboo zones. Best for climbers short on time.
The Piswa Trail
The most gentle ascent on the mountain, starting at a higher elevation. Known for its towering Podocarpus forests and wildlife viewing opportunities. This route crosses past the geothermal hot springs before reaching the caldera.
Sipi-Bushiyi Traverse
A spectacular cross-mountain expedition. Start at the lush Sipi trailhead, summit Wagagai peak, and descend via the steep, rugged Bushiyi trail, experiencing two completely different sides of the mountain in one epic trek.
Preparation Guide
Best Time to Climb
The dry seasons (December to March and June to August) provide the best hiking conditions. During rains, the steep descents can become incredibly slippery.
Altitude & Weather
The summit at 4,321m is well into the alpine zone. Nighttime temperatures frequently drop below freezing. A warm sleeping bag and high-quality rain gear are essential.
Sipi Falls Add-On
Pair your trek perfectly with a visit to the spectacular Sipi Falls. Add a day of waterfall hiking, coffee farm tours, or abseiling before your ascent begins.
