Expedition Overview
The 7-Day Central Circuit is the definitive, historic loop through the Rwenzori Mountains. It offers an incredible opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty of the “Mountains of the Moon” without the need for technical ice climbing gear.
This carefully paced trek takes you through five distinct ecological zones, from dense tropical rainforests and bamboo groves to the surreal, high-altitude alpine zones filled with giant lobelias and groundsels. You will bypass the high glaciers, crossing instead over the dramatic Scott Elliot and Freshfield mountain passes, while camping beside the pristine, shimmering waters of Lake Kitandara and Lake Bujuku.

Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut
Arrive at the Kasese Basecamp for a comprehensive equipment check and safety briefing. Begin the ascent through thick equatorial rainforest, listening for Rwenzori Turacos and Blue Monkeys. The steady climb ends at Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m).

Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut
Descend through the forest to cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge over the Mubuku River. Navigate steep, rocky, and slippery sections through the bamboo forest to reach John Matte Hut (3,414m), where you catch your first glimpse of the snow-capped peaks.

John Matte to Bujuku Hut
Today involves crossing the infamous Bigo Bogs. You’ll jump across tussocks and navigate boardwalks through surreal giant lobelias. The trail continues to the beautiful Lake Bujuku, sitting in a deep valley beneath Mount Stanley and Mount Baker.

Bujuku Hut (3,962m)
Bujuku to Kitandara Hut via Scott Elliot Pass
Leaving Bujuku, you face a steep, challenging climb to the highest point of this trek: Scott Elliot Pass (4,372m). The views of the Margherita glaciers and Mount Baker are spectacular. After taking in the views, you descend to the stunning twin lakes of Kitandara.

Kitandara to Guy Yeoman Hut
A sharp climb out of the Kitandara lakes takes you over Freshfield Pass (4,282m). From here, the long descent begins. You’ll pass historical rock shelters, navigate steep rocky trails, and walk through beautiful alpine meadows before reaching Guy Yeoman Hut.

Guy Yeoman to Nyabitaba Hut
The trail drops significantly today. You will navigate tricky, muddy descents past Kichuchu and through the bamboo zone, eventually crossing the river again to arrive back at Nyabitaba Hut, where the air is thick and warm once more.

Nyabitaba to Basecamp Departure

Frequently Asked Questions
The best and most comfortable times to trek the Rwenzoris are during the dry seasons: December to February and June to August.
However, the Rwenzoris are notorious for having their own micro-climate. It can rain at any time of the year, so proper waterproof gear is absolutely essential regardless of when you book.
For Margherita Peak (5,109m), basic mountaineering experience is highly recommended but not strictly required if you are very fit and a fast learner. The final ascent involves crossing the Stanley Plateau glacier, requiring ropes, crampons, and ice axes.
Our expert IFMGA-trained guides will provide training on how to use the equipment during the trek. If you prefer to avoid the ice, our Central Circuit trek offers incredible high-altitude views without the technical glacier climbing.
Altitude Sickness can affect anyone, regardless of fitness level. Our itineraries are specifically designed with slow ascents to promote proper acclimatization.
Our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and carry oxygen saturation monitors. We recommend drinking 3-4 liters of water daily on the mountain and walking slowly ("pole pole"). You may also consult your doctor about altitude medications like Diamox before your trip.
Accommodation consists of basic but sturdy wooden mountain huts equipped with bunk beds and mattresses. You will need to bring your own warm sleeping bag.
Our expedition cooks prepare hearty, high-carb, and nutritious meals to keep your energy up. Breakfasts usually include porridge, eggs, and toast. Dinners consist of hot soups, pasta, rice, potatoes, and fresh vegetables. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets if informed in advance.
